Matt Arnold scanned his items and tapped his Nectar card at the Sainsbury’s East Dulwich self-service till. Staff approached him and said he could not be served because of “an earlier incident.” He looked up at the CCTV monitor and saw a red circle drawn around his own face. He was escorted out. Arnold described feeling humiliated and powerless. Sainsbury’s later called it human error and suspended the Facewatch system at that single store. The technology continues operating elsewhere.
How the Flag Produced a Public Accusation
Arnold, a 46-year-old comedy promoter, was buying supplies for an event at the neighbouring football club on 6 August. After scanning his basket he waved staff over to approve an alcohol purchase. Two managers told him the system had linked him to a previous incident that week. He was removed from the premises. From the entrance he saw the overhead monitor still displaying the red circle around his face.
Sainsbury’s head office contacted him the next day with an apology. The company stated the incident was caused by human error rather than the facial recognition technology itself. It cited a 99.98 percent accuracy rate and said every match is reviewed by a trained manager. Facewatch, the system provider, said a correct alert was sent and the problem occurred in how store staff handled and communicated it. Both parties place the failure on the human side of the process. Neither explanation undoes the public confrontation or the image of a red circle on a store monitor.
This is the second such false-accusation case at Sainsbury’s this year. After the earlier incident the retailer emphasised staff training. The same pattern has now repeated.
The Error Rate Meets Everyday Footfall

A claimed 99.98 percent accuracy rate still produces real false positives when applied to constant customer traffic across dozens of stores. Each misidentification can result in a shopper being stopped at the till, told they are linked to theft, and asked to leave. Alerts can remain visible on staff devices for up to an hour. Misidentifications are logged, but the immediate experience for the person flagged is public accusation without prior notice or meaningful chance to contest the match in the moment.
Arnold argued the system should be paused across all locations. He specifically raised the risk for vulnerable or younger shoppers who may lack the confidence or resources to challenge staff on the spot. Sainsbury’s has limited the suspension to East Dulwich as a precautionary step while additional training occurs. No broader pause has been announced.
Accountability Still Points in Circles
When a live facial recognition system generates an alert that leads to the wrong person being ejected, responsibility is shared between the algorithm, the retailer, and the staff who act on the alert. In this case both companies insist the technology itself performed correctly. The shopper remains the one who experienced the humiliation. No independent regulator has intervened on the basis of available reporting. The system stays live in the remaining stores.
The question is no longer whether facial recognition can reduce theft. It is whether retailers can run continuous biometric scanning of ordinary customers without producing public false accusations that the companies then attribute solely to human handling. One store has been paused. The rest of the network continues.
